House Republican Leader Comments on CACR1

CONCORD – House Republican Leader Gene Chandler (R-Bartlett) today offered the following statement on CACR 1, a Constitutional Amendment that would require a 3/5 majority to pass legislation imposing new or increased taxes or fees. The measure failed 206 to 149.

House Republican Leader Gene Chandler

“By passing this constitutional amendment, we would have given the citizens of New Hampshire the opportunity to ensure that we keep limited government in place by making it more difficult to raise taxes in the future. Unfortunately, Democrats voted today to make it easier to raise taxes and fees on New Hampshire citizens. The economy has yet to recover and raising taxes while families across the state still struggle financially is exactly the wrong way to help them. Passing CACR 1 would have given the citizens of New Hampshire the opportunity to ensure that we keep limited government in place by making it more difficult to raise taxes in the future. It would simply have put this issue on the ballot and allowed the voters to decide for themselves next election.”
