House Leaders Comment on Fetal Homicide Legislation

CONCORD – House Speaker William O’Brien (R-Mont Vernon) and House Majority Leader Pete Silva (R-Nashua) today offered the following comments after the House voted to concur with Senate changes to legislation (House Bill 217) that would allow prosecutors to charge those who kill an unborn child with murder, manslaughter or negligent homicide.

House Speaker William O’Brien

“This important legislation ensures that families who lose an unborn child at the hands of another will receive justice.  It is a proper and appropriate tool to give prosecutors so that they may appropriately charge those individuals who are responsible for the death of these children.  Furthermore, we certainly hope that this will be a strong deterrent to anyone who would consider such an egregious crime.”

House Majority Leader Pete Silva

“Killing an unborn child is an outrageous breach of what we stand for as a society.  It is only appropriate to protect those who are so vulnerable and send a clear message that we will not tolerate anyone who attacks a woman.  This bill gives law enforcement the ability to keep our children safer.”
